Definitions and Perspectives

Business Process Management (BPM) includes a number of disciplines and techniques for handling processes.

In business terminology, process is a defined, routine action taken by a person or group to achieve a goal. Projects differ from process in that projects exhibit a significant degree of uniqueness.

Business process management also includes:
  • Business Process Re-engineering (BPR)
  • Continuous Process Improvement (CPI)

Technically, CPI and BPR are a subset of BPM. BPM includes the design, implementation, tracking and general maintenance of business processes while CPI and BPR deal with significant changes to processes.

Standards

Six Sigma© is a special implementation of CPI developed by Motorola Corporation. It's primary application is in the manufacturing arena, although many have attempted to tailor it to business processes.

Earlier implementations of BPM, BPR, and CPI include Total Quality Management (TQM) and Quality Circles. Again, these were specific implementations of BPM and are all but extinct.
